Help is on hand for cancer hair-loss women

A NEW service to help women who have lost their hair after cancer treatment is now available in Mexborough.

Around 42,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in England every year. For many, losing their hair can be one of the most traumatic parts of cancer treatment, health officials say, with a devastating impact on confidence and self-esteem.

Breast Cancer Care’s HeadStong service, which helps people facing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment, is now taking appointments at the Aurora Patients talk to specially trained volunteers about how to tie headscarves and use hats and hairpieces and pick up share tips about hair and scalp care before, during, and after treatment and talk through any worries patients may have.

Tracey Stevens, regional services coordinator at Breast Cancer Care, said: “Losing your hair as a result of cancer treatment can be a traumatic experience, but one we believe people shouldn't have to face on their own. 

“HeadStrong offers free, local support to people that can boost their confidence and self-esteem and I would urge anyone facing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment to get in touch and find out more about how HeadStrong can help them.”

HeadStrong appointments are held every other Friday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am and last around one hour. To book call 0300 0111 202.
