Golden day for Harriers' athletes

HARRIERS brought home two gold medals from the Northern Indoor Championships, fought out by top athletes at the Insitute of Sport.

Thirteen Rotherham youngsters competed and the golds went to U17 athletes Amy Gellion (300m) and Ellie Booker (60m) with a bronze medal for defending U20 champion Lee Thompson, who was a little below his best in the 400m while there was a third place in the Senior Women's high jump for heptathlete Beth Taylor

With three hard races over 300m in one day, Amy ran superbly to take second place in her heat and then did enough to qualify for the final with another second place in her semi. She showed the wisdom of keeping something back as she clocked a new indoor personal best of 40.86 in the final to earn the winner’s medal.

Ellie missed most of the summer season with injuries but eased her way into the new year with second place in her heat (7.96) and she then stormed away to win the first semi final in a new PB of 7.85 and then proceeded to better that with a gold medal run of 7.82 in the final.

Lee won his semi-final in 49.77 but was unable to better that in the final, running 49.80 to take third place in a high class field.
