The huge engineering works were made necessary by the terrifying events of June 25, 2007, when the Victorian spillway wall collapsed and the dam almost failed
Nearby villages were evacuated and the M1 was closed.
Ulley dam facts
- 2,600 tonnes of limestone were initially used to shore up the erosion.
- Consultants Ove Arup carried out the technical investigations and design work, which included building a working model of the new spillway.
- Besides a new spillway, contractors Ringway are fitting a new scour pipe and installing erosion protection to the embankment.
- The reservoir covers 35 acres and has been partially drained while the work is carried out.
- The repairs should be complete by next Spring.
