Fresh witness plea over road death

POLICE have renewed an appeal into the death of a 56-year-old man believed to have been lying in the road when he was struck by a car and killed 12 months ago.

Officers believe that Peter Topping was laid in the carriageway of Co-operative Street, Goldthorpe, when he was hit by a car at around 8.25pm on December 29, 2011.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

Witnesses stated that the vehicle continued along Co-operative Street, before turning left onto Doncaster Road.

Despite extensive enquiries in the area and assistance from the local community, neither the driver nor the vehicle has been traced.

Police have now renewed the appeal to speak to the owners of three three vehicles that are believed to have been in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident — a dark coloured Mercedes C-Class, a dark coloured Land Rover Freelander and a silver Audi A3.

Inspector Geoff Young said: “Although this incident is 12 months old we are still actively trying to trace the vehicle and the driver.

“The investigation is continuing but the police need the public’s help.

“The three vehicles that left Co-operative Street near the time of the incident may contain witnesses.

“The drivers of the vehicles may live in the immediate area or may have been visiting someone, but if anyone has any information about them, please let us know.”
