Four rescued from blazing kitchen

THREE children and an elderly woman were rescued from a kitchen fire in Wombwell.

Crews were alerted to the incident at 8pm last Saturday on Bondfield Crescent.

The children aged nine, seven and four and the woman aged 82 were all in the living room and were unable to get out of the house.

The parents had gone out for the evening and had locked the door as they left, not realising the four in the house did not have a key.

Firefighters rescued the children through a ground floor window, while the woman was led to safety after crews managed to break the door in to the property.

All four went by ambulance to Barnsley General Hospital suffering slight smoke inhalation.

The fire, thought to have started accidentally in the kitchen due to the hob being left on, was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
