Football fun in memory of Phillip Law

AN AFTERNOON of football fun was the latest event raising money in memory of teenager Phillip Law.

Teams of his friends competed in Rawmarsh on Saturday, organised by Rotherham Sunday League scene regular Mark Pilley.

The memorial fund is being co-ordinated by Phillip’s former teacher Alison Williams through Swinton Community School.

Cash raised will be spent on safety and life-saving equipment and a commemorative bench at Manvers Lake, where 15-year-old Phillip drowned in June.

His mum Sam, of Kilnhurst Road, Rawmarsh, said: “Quite a few turned out, and it was fun to see the girls team trying to beat the boys. I think they might just have managed it!”

The football day, at Claypit Lane playing fields, raised more than £150. This will top up the £1,700 raised by a sponsored walk at the lake in June.

A decision will be made on how to spend the money at the start of the new school year, once the remaining sponsorship payments are collected.
