The Rotherham area has officially been declared to be in drought after several months of below average rainfall.

And the Environment Agency says much of the country could remain in drought for the rest of this year.

Polly Chancellor, National Drought Co-ordinator, said: “While we’ve had some welcome rain this week, the environmental drought affecting large parts of England could last until Christmas.

“The soil is so dry that only steady rain over the winter will restore rivers and groundwaters.

“We would urge everyone—right across the country—to help by using less water.”

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for rain today with downpours continuing into next week.
