Five set for children's charity cycle

A GROUP of keen Rotherham cyclists are to take on a 100-mile challenge to raise money for a children’s charity.

Andy Liversidge (26) has brought together the team of five riders to take part in the Sheffield 100 on July 14.

The brand new event will take them on a trek to the heart of the Peak District as they raise money for Action Medical Research.

“It’s an absolutely gruelling course,” said Andy, “There’s some monster hills to negotiate, but some beautiful countryside along the way.”

Andy will be joined by brother Gary, Charlie Tennick, Matt Fieldhouse and Clive Edmunds for the ride.

The team will be representing JE James Cycles, where Andy has worked for nearly ten years, and Baby Care.

“It was Gary who came across this event,” said Andy, from Maltby. “He’s recently got into the sport of cycling and has always been the competitive older brother type and approached me with the idea of riding it with him.

“After reading about the event and all the hard work the charity does, I was very interested.

"I decided to put out an advert on the company’s Facebook page to see if we could get a team together and the response we had was brilliant.”

Once the team was in place, they began knuckling down into a training regime.

Andy, who became a parent last year, said: “Personally I’ve had the good fortune of being blessed with a healthy child, my first son Roman who was born in January 2009.

“Children are an amazing, integral part of any parent’s life, so I’m sure the team will get an enormous sense of satisfaction from the knowledge that we’ll be helping others with any problems that may arise with their little one.”

Action Medical Research has been dedicated to improving the health of babies and children in the UK for nearly 60 years.

It has boosted numerous breakthroughs, such as the UK polio vaccine and ultrasound scanning in pregnancy.
