Five per cent of Rotherham homes dodge TV licence

MORE than 2,300 people were caught watching TV without a licence in Rotherham during 2012.

TV Licensing said that the average evasion rate remains at a low of just over five per cent, meaning almost 95 per cent of homes are correctly licensed.

More than 2,600 were caught watching without a licence in Doncaster, more than 1,800 in Barnsley and over 4,500 in Sheffield.

A colour TV licence currently costs £145.50 and is required by anyone watching or recording TV programmes as they are shown on TV, whether they are using a TV set, computer, or any other equipment. Failure to buy a licence can result in prosecution and a find of up to £1,000.
