Five arrested after Rotherham EDL protest

POLICE have arrested five people for violent disorder after a town centre protest by the English Defence League.

The Rotherham rally passed without incident on May 10, but a fight between demonstrators broke out in Sheffield pub The Howard at around 4pm.

Two EDL supporters — one man and one woman — were arrested on Monday morning.

Also arrested were two men and one woman from counter-protest group Unite Against Fascism.

Police have not yet named the five, who are all from Sheffield or Long Eaton.

Rotherham DCI Bob Chapman said: “Police forces have a duty to facilitate a peaceful protest and we will work with event organisers and partners to ensure such events are calm and safe for everyone.

“However, any suggestion of criminality will be thoroughly investigated and anyone who crosses the line will face the consequences.”
