Fire Authority faces Council Tax choice

COUNCILLORS will decide next week whether to freeze or raise the fire service precept part of council tax.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority will debate the option of a 1.97 per cent rise at their meeting next Monday.

Householders in Band D currently pay £65.04 per year to fund South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue — around £1.25 per week.

Applying the near-two per cent rise would raise around £424,000 in annual funding for the fire service — £163,000 more than would be raised by accepting a grant to freeze council tax.
