Field fires tackled

A crew from the Rotherham fire station were called to a field off Newbiggin Close, Parkgate at 2.20am after a hay bale was set alight.

Firefighters from the same station also attended a 5am blaze on a field off Long Lane, Whiston after an arson attack involving fly-tipped rubbish.

The Advertiser reported last week how farmers were being urged to take steps to deter fire-setting as the number of field fires in the borough since June reached 45.

Meanwhile, an old mattress dumped on open land was set alight on Monday evening.

Fire officers were called to the fire at 8.30pm on Old Warren Vale, Rawmarsh.
