Ex-miners invited to get involved with memorial wall

FAMILIES of ex-miners are being invited to place a brick on a memorial wall which aims to cement the history of the village.

The appeal has been made by the Yorkshire Main Commemorative Trust which was set up by a group of ex-miners to ensure that the significance of the Edlington-based colliery was preserved for present and future generations.

One of the group’s many projects is a memorial wall featuring bricks dedicated to ex-miners.

Now, as the project nears completion, members of the group are appealing for anyone who has not yet placed a brick, to get in touch.

Trust chairman  Frank Arrowsmith said: “The project has created  quite a lot of very positive feedback.

“We  now want to give the families of ex miners the chance to place a brick on the wall before we complete the project later this year.”

The commemorative wall and paved landscaped area sits in front of the Edlington Community Centre which was once home to the Miners’ Rest Centre.

The wall has been completed thanks to help from Mansell Construction who provided labour, tools and materials free of charge as part of their Making a Difference in a Weekend community project.

The project was run in conjunction with Doncaster Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) who selected the trust as the winning bidder.

The Trust also hopes to erect a monument within this area which is currently being designed by pupils at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College in Edlington.
