Winterhill pupils’ work helps bring pond back to life

THE regeneration of a rundown pond is continuing to blossom thanks to students and residents’ hard work.

Winterhill School pupils began cleaning up The Old Engine pond in front of the school in Kimberworth two years ago after concerns from the local community about the over-grown, polluted area.

Last month, more volunteers from the school and the community gave up their Saturday to plant bulbs, trim trees and litterpick.

Simon Jeffery, behaviour and learning leader at Winterhill in Kimberworth, said a new pathway had also been installed to give a safe walkway for people to use without slipping in the mud.

He added: “Students won the Local Assembly Community Award this year for their hard work and it has also been one of the reasons the National Trust has chosen Winterhill fields as a location to invest money.”
