Properties in the Dearne Valley to get flood prevention kit

HOMES that were battered by the 2007 floods are set to benefit from £274,000 protection kit.

Flood prevention measures will be fitted to 48 properties in Bolton on Dearne thanks to the grant from the Environment Agency.

The money follows a bid from Barnsley Council and will be used to help residents living on Mexborough Road, Lowfield Road, Meadowgates and Riverside Gardens.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesman for development, environment and culture, said: “I'm pleased that we have been successful in getting this funding which is much needed in the Dearne.

“These works are a positive move by Barnsley Council in supporting residents in this area.”

Flood consultation surveys will now be carried out to assess what measures will need to be put in place at the various properties.

Suitable contractors will be identified and the project —which is expected to take several weeks — will begin in the new year.

A council spokeswoman added: “Equipment includes air-brick covers and removable door barriers which are put in place at times of flood risk to provide a watertight seal on external doors.

“One-way valves for waste pipes will also be fitted to prevent flood water flowing up the property’s waste water and sewage pipes.”

As part of this Property Level Protection (PLP) scheme, a consultation event for eligible residents in the Bolton on Dearne area is planned for Wednesday, November 7.

Council staff will be on hand to provide further details about the project along with other flooding-related information and advice.
