“It looked an eyesore. I couldn’t believe they would do it here at the cenotaph. We’ve just had all the remembrance services for the D-Day anniversary.

“They are scumbags. They dumped between ten and 14 black bin bags in the grounds of our cenotaph.”

The bags — containing pipes, plastic sheets, plants and electrical equipment — were dumped at about 1.45am last Thursday. They were removed by Streetpride later the same day.

Cllr Sarah Allen, Rotherham Borough Council cabinet member for cleaner, greener communities, said: “We’re determined to work with communities to bring those who carry out this crime to justice so that we have a strong community in a clean and safe environment.

“If anyone has any information about fly-tipping, they can report it to us at www.rotherham.gov.uk/report.”
