Fine for Rotherham litterbug

DROPPING a cigarette proved an expensive mistake for a Rotherham woman.

Yasmin Jade Middleton (19) of Roughwood Road in the town dropped a cigarette end on Cheapside in Barnsley in June and was convicted by the town’s magistrates of not paying a fixed penalty fine given at the time.

She now has to fork out for a £75 fine plus £120 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Cllr Roy Miller, Barnsley Council’s Cabinet spokesman for Place, said: “Cigarette ends are litter and must be disposed of responsibly or you will face a fine.

“We have a tough stance on litterers who blight our streets and cost council tax payers money in street cleaning bills.”
