Engineers to assess safety of newspaper office after crash

STAFF at the Dearne Valley Weekender office have been evacuated after a car smashed into the building.

Police and firefighters were called to the office, in High Street, Mexborough, at around 4.10pm on Monday.

Engineers have also been called to assess whether the building is structurally safe.

Jamie Ollivent, operations director for the Weekender’s parent company Regional Media Ltd, said: “Basically, the bloke has parked his Ford Mondeo in the car park behind the building and it’s rolled down the hill and gone into the wall.

“It’s caused quite a bit of damage to an extension of the building which has a toilet in it — and someone was using it just minutes before.

“A structural engineer is on his way to have a look at the damage to make sure it is safe to move the vehicle because we don’t want the whole building to fall down. I think it’ll be a few hours before anything can be done.”

A South Yorkshire police spokesman confirmed the force had officers at the scene.
