Ellie's a gold star at Transplant Games!

ROTHERHAM youngster Ellie Greenwood has added to this summer’s British medal glory by winning a gold and silver at a major sporting event.

But while national attention has been focussed on the Olympics and the Paralympics in London, Ellie (7) won her medals at the British Transplant Games in Medway, Kent.

She won a gold in the badminton competition and a silver in the ball-throw event at the Westfield Health-sponsored games where she competed as a member of the Leeds Children’s Transplant Team.

More than 500 athletes aged between two and 82 competed in 14 sports at this year’s games, organised on behalf of the charity Transplant Sport UK (TSUK).

They are one of the UK's biggest annual multi-sport events. This year's games consisted of events ranging from archery to tennis and swimming to track and field, showcasing the benefits of transplantation and the healthy, active lives many patients now lead.

The games are intended to encourage people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register and discuss their wishes with their families. There are currently more than 7,500 people in need of a transplant, but only 28 per cent of the public are signed up to the Register.
