Economy causes Wetherspoons to reduce Bluecoat expansion plans

A PUB based in a listed building dating back 300 years has scaled back its extension plans because of the challenging economic climate.

The Bluecoat was opened as a charity school by the Feoffees in the early 18th century, with its current name derived from the pupils’ uniforms.

JD Wetherspoon was given planning permission in 2020 for a large extension and changes to the internal layout of the grade II-listed pub, at The Crofts.

A new application said the alterations now being sought comprise refurbishment inside plus a separate toilet for staff and a small staircase link outside to improve table service.

The planning papers say: “The site has been previously given approval for a much more extensive scheme which saw large changes to the pubs internal and external areas.

“However, the change in economic climate over the last few months has prompted our client into investigating a revised scheme, largely comprised of refurbishment works which will bring the property back to the company standards, as well as improved provisions for staff.”
