Driver charged over crash which killed man (72)

A MAN has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal collision in Mexborough.

Victim John Thompson (72), from Conisbrough, died as a result of his injuries after the crash on Doncaster Road, Mexborough, on Sunday morning.

Three cars were involved in the collision — a black Audi A4 travelling towards Mexborough from Denaby Main, and a white Vauxhall Corsa and a green Toyota Corolla, both travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Thompson, the driver of the Toyota, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver of the Audi, Aleksandrs Ivanovs, appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The 31-year-old, of Manvers Road, Mexborough, was remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday, March 22.

A passenger in the Audi, a 34-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but has since been discharged. 

A second passenger in the Audi, an 18-year-old man, and the driver of the Corsa, a 41-year-old man, suffered slight injuries.
