Downpours make it slow going for commuters

SEVERAL routes in Rotherham were hit by flooding after heavy rainfall yesterday.

Aldwarke Road in Rawmarsh was closed this morning because of flooding, which had also caused slow traffic between Barber’s Avenue and Waddington Way.

Wentworth Road, Kilnhurst, was also shut off and there were traffic problems between the Highthorn Road and Thomas Street junction.

Travel South Yorkshire said Centenary Way was “just passable” at Masbrough despite flooding.

Heavy rain throughout Thursday became lighter overnight but there was still a flood warning on the River Don on Friday.

The Environment Agency said washlands including Kilnhurst, Denaby and Sprotbrough were expected to flood.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue assisted with a flooding incident in Penistone but reported no weather-related callouts in Rotherham.

Forecasters say the rain will ease today, but heavy rain will return on Sunday.
