Deer oh deer! Baby fawn rescued from canal

OH deer oh deer!

OH deer, oh deer!

Fire crews had to carry out a water rescue with a difference today when a young fawn was stranded in a canal.

The deer was stuck in water near Station Road, Mexborough and four crews attended the scene at 9.10am this morning (Wednesday).

Firefighters from Dearne, Edlington, Tankersley and Aston Park attended the incident along with staff from the RSPCA.

The deer had gone for a swim in the canal but was unable to get out again, a South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said.

She added that after treading water for a few hours the one-year-old had become quite tired, but crews managed to get a rope around its neck and pull it to safety.

RSPCA staff spent a few hours with the fawn before releasing it back into the wild.
