Vandals cause train delays and cancellations

MORE THAN 100 trains were delayed or cancelled earlier this month after signalling cables were interfered with.

British Transport Police (BTP) said cables were pulled out and looped over the railway line near Mexborough Station at around 3pm on Wednesday, December 16.

The force is now appealing for anyone with information about the incident or who saw anything suspicious to get in touch.

DC Andy Lehman, investigating officer, said: "The signalling power cables on the Doncaster to Sheffield line were pulled and looped over the railway line causing a passing train to cut them.

"This resulted in 130 trains being delayed and nine cancellations.

"As well as endangering their own lives the person or people responsible caused a massive amount of disruption to the rail network."

Anyone with any information should call BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 quoting PSUB/B6 of December 21.

Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
