The eyewitness said one man “who appeared to be very drunk” threw a punch at a steward during the game between Fitzwilliam Arms FC and Westville FC.

He said: “By all accounts, it kicked off and the stewards threw two men out of the ground and the police were waiting outside.

“The steward said one of them tried to throw a punch at him as he tried to eject him from the ground.

“It didnt kick off between supporters, it was just two people shouting and mouthing off because they were either on drugs or very drunk.”

James Scothern, manager of Fitzwilliam Arms, said: “All the Fitz fans were kids and families whereas more of the Westville supporters were single people.

“I did hear about the dog handlers but they were rumours, I didn't see anything myself.”

Westville, who play in the Mexborough and District Premier League, won the game 2-1 thanks to an injury time penalty from Kirean Hirst.

Rob Furniss, Westville FC club secretary, said: “I heard a couple of people were ejected from the stadium but I don't know who they were or if they were associated with either of the clubs.”

A spokesperson for the County FA said: “Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA was delighted that the Sunday Senior Cup Final won by Westville, who beat Fitzwilliam Arms by 2-1 was enjoyed by so many spectators at the New York Stadium last Wednesday evening.

“That said, the County FA was disappointed to hear that three individuals, who had been ejected from the ground during the match were subsequently misbehaving outside the ground and that this needed police involvement to deal with it.”

The Advertiser contacted South Yorkshire Police for a comment but did not receive a response.
