The pair was struck around 200 yards from the vehicle scrap yard on the road by a dark coloured SAAB 93 estate car which failed to stop at the scene.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Following enquiries a vehicle has been seized by the police and has been subject to forensic examination.”

Sgt Steve Askham said “After the collision the car had significant damage to the windscreen, which was clearly visible, and I believe that it was being driven in the area for a period of time after the collision.

“Despite the fact arrests have been made, this enquiry is at an early stage and these arrests are only one small part of this enquiry.

“I am keen to speak to anybody who holds any information about this incident, and even if you think it is insignificant, this information may just be the piece we need to bring the person responsible to justice.”
