Suspect at large after alleged assault

ARMED police were called to a flat in East Herringthorpe this morning (Friday) following an alleged assault.

Officers were called to the Hounsfield Road area in the early hours of this morning to help in the hunt for a man wanted in connection with the incident.

Chf Supt Jason Harwin, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "We had a complaint an assault overnight and when responding to that allegation there was a potential risk to the officers by the person believed to be responsible.

"We have not located the suspect at the moment and enquiries are ongoing to locate him.

"At this stage there is no indication of any wider risk to the public."

Unarmed officers remained at the scene at 9am this morning.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I didn't see what happened but it's not nice to have armed police on your street.

"I just woke up and saw all of the police cars parked up. Investigators keep going in and out of the block of flats."
