Spotting signs of labour exploitation

SOUTH Yorkshire Police hopes to raise awareness of labour exploitation as part of its modern slavery campaign.

Officers hope more people will spot the signs to help victims escape lives where traffickers take most of their wages.

Supt Bob Chapman said: “Not only can victims be subject to long working hours and sub-standard living conditions, but they can also be victims of sexual abuse and threats of violence.

“If people know what to look out for and report their suspicions to us, we will be in a better position to help.

“Signs to look out for include a person being excessively dependent on employers or others, and their wages being witheld or vastly reduced.

“Some victims have their movements restricted and are confined to the workplace or to a limited area.”
