AN ELDERLY shop owner foiled an armed robbery on his convenience store after he chased away two men – one of whom had a gun.

The incident on the Best One Store, Wath, took place on September 29 at around 7.30am.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said two men arrived in a vehicle from the direction of Gypsy Green Lane, where it meets Woodlands Road.

The men, one armed with a firearm, entered the Quarry Hill Road shop and demanded cash.

They attempted to take money from the till but were chased off by the elderly shopkeeper back down Gypsy Green Lane.

The man with the firearm was described as white, 6ft tall, of a fit build and was wearing a dark camouflage hooded top and blue Adidas bottoms with a white stripe.

The second man was described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, of a stocky build and was wearing dark clothing with a thigh length dark coat.

Both men spoke with a Yorkshire accent.

The spokeswoman added three men wearing balaclavas, and one in a similar camouflage coat, were seen prior to the attempted robbery at 7.15am on Winterwell Road, Wath.

No-one has been arrested and police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the men.
