Police braced for demos and football fans

POLICE are expecting a busy weekend today with an influx of football fans expected as well as two demonstrations.

 The far-right British National Party is holding a protest against plans to rebuild the Chapel Walk Mosque.

 That was due to be countered by the Unite Against Facism group.

 BNP organiser Marlene Guest said: “We will be holding a demonstration to protest against yet another mosque in Rotherham.

 “The demonstation open to anyone who is seriously concerned about the spread of Islam and what is being done to our town.

 “We were never asked or consulted if we wanted to be overwhelmed with a people who are totally different to us.”

 Meanwhile, more than `1,000 Cardiff City fans have arranged with police to  stop off in Rotherham before the game at Sheffield Wednesday.

 A spokesman for the UAF said: “The fascist BNP is desperately trying to revive its flagging support by targeting a mosque that has been a symbol of peaceful multicultural Rotherham for 40 years.

 “The BNP is again trying to whip up racism by spreading smears about the Muslim community and peddling lies that blame immigration for cuts in the NHS and council services.

 “It’s outrageous that these racists should be allowed to stir up hatred and division in our community. The vast majority of people say they are not welcome here.”

 Chief Supt Jason Harwin extra officers were working.

 “We respect any individual’s right to peaceful protest, but we will not tolerate criminal offences,” he said.
