Operation will target criminals on the road

POLICE are taking part in work targeting foreign criminals using UK road networks for cross-border crimes.

Officers from the local policing and specialist support teams will work with other forces and law enforcement agencies from today on Operation Trivium.

They will perform stop checks and use intelligence to tackle offenders involved in criminal activity like modern slavery.

Chief Insp Glen Suttenwood, operations manager for joint specialist ops, said: “The activity we have planned in Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham will target offenders who are involved in this type of criminality.

“Criminal activity such as modern slavery is a serious issue that affects vulnerable people who may be at risk of exploitation, and the work done as part of this operation is vital to tackle these crimes head on.

“Working collectively with different agencies allows a proactive approach to be taken to target these criminals and stop them from using our roads to engage in illegal activity.”

There were 9,009 vehicles stopped and 361 arrests made during last year’s operation.
