Mum injured in "nasty and sustained" attack outside pub

A MUM attacked outside a pub on her birthday - suffering suspected internal bleeding - says she will never be out alone again.

Leah Hopkins said she went for a cigarette outside the Alpine pub, Grayson Road, Greasbrough at around 1am on Saturday, February 20 when she was set upon by a group of people.

The married mum-of-three hoped to see relatives over from Skegness for a funeral but they had left when she arrived.

Leah (37) said: “I went outside for a cigarette and a lad said: ‘What are you looking at?’ and called me a fat bitch. I think he was showing off to his mates.

“Me being me, I told him to eff off. That’s when they all attacked me, kicking me in the head and punching and kicking me in the ribs.

“There were two main ones, a man and a woman.

“I was just lying in the foetal position trying to protect my head.”

She added: “I was in agony and I’m black bright from the bruising.

“I received a number of injuries and could have been killed.

“The pain’s been horrendous. I’ve had problems with my vision and my GP has sent me for more tests because there might be a bleed behind my eye.

“I don’t want sympathy, I just don’t want it to happen to anyone else. It needs the right publicity to stop this kind of thing. I’ll definitely not be out on my own again.”

PC Karen Holmes, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “This was a nasty and sustained assault on a woman outside a pub on a Saturday night and we believe a number people will have witnessed the incident.

“We’re also aware that there is information circulating on social media and I’d urge anyone that could help with the investigation to make contact with police.

“The level of violence shown against the victim is concerning, so it’s important we identify those responsible as quickly as possible.”
