MP warns of fake collections for toddler blaze victim

DON Valley MP Caroline Flint has described fraudsters claiming to be collecting for two-year-old fire victim Libby-Jayne Hornsby as “disgusting”.

The MP spoke out after hearing reports of people going door to door in Conisbrough using the toddler’s death as an excuse to collect funds.

She said: “To use a community’s grief for this family to defraud people of money is disgusting.

“If anyone sees people pretending to collect for Libby-Jayne’s family they should report it to the police immediately.  These door to door fraudsters have no shame, and need to be stopped.”

The warning comes just days after mourners came together to say goodbye to the little girl described as “always full of life and fun”.

Family and friends gathered at St Peter’s Church in Conisbrough on Friday to honour Libby-Jayne who lost her life following a house fire on Don Street in Conisbrough on October 17.

Firefighters pulled her from an upstairs window but she later died at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Loved ones watched on as a purple coffin adorned with white flowers was carried to the church where family members paid tribute to the little girl who would be “forever in their hearts”.

The family has also warned people to be vigilant after learning that fake collections were being made on their behalf.

A spokesman said: “We have been made aware that there are people visiting homes in the local area claiming to be collecting money on behalf of our family.

“In light of this we would like to warn people against giving donations.”

Firefighters and police continue to carry out a joint investigation into the cause of the fire, which was confined to an upstairs bedroom and involved bedding. It is believed that the fire started accidentally.
