No incidents were actually reported at any schools but emergency protocols were followed from the start of the school day until lunchtime.

A police spokesperson said: “ We are currently investigating reports of malicious communications being sent to schools across Rotherham this morning.

“ At this time we are satisfied these reports are malicious communications and pro-active enquiries are taking place to establish the identity of those sending them.”

One school source said classes had gone into a partial lockdown, with windows closed and blinds drawn.

He said pupils were unfazed by the process, which they had practised before.
