Jail for drink driver who crashed after police chase
Alex Winn (23), of Avondale Road, Masbrough, was sentenced to nine months in jail for dangerous driving and a month for theft, to be served consecutively, after appearing at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on September 13.
He was charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, aggravated theft of a motor vehicle, drink driving and failing to stop in connection with the incident on August 24.
Police said at the time that Winn had been driving a black Seat Leon spotted in Rawmarsh, “overtaking cars like he owned the road”.
Police reportedly signalled for the driver to stop and then gave chase but the Leon left the road at the roundabout at the junction of West Bawtry Road and Rotherway in Canklow.
Winn was also handed a four-year disqualification and ordered to pay £85 in costs and £187 victim surcharge.
Explaining the reason for a prison sentence, court documents said the offence was so serious “because you put not only yourself but members of the public in serious danger” and “because the offence was aggravated by the defendant's record of previous offending”.
