Hundreds evacuated amid high school blaze

Wombwell High School was evacuated on Monday lunchtime after fire broke out in a classroom.

Five fire crews along with support units went to the scene, on Roebuck Street, at around 1.10pm. Around 900 people were safely evacuated.

Crews from Rotherham, Barnsley, Dearne and Elm Lane stations wore breathing apparatus to locate the fire in a first-floor classroom, believed to be an IT suite.

The blaze was extinguished using a hose reel. No-one was injured.

The classroom and roof void area suffered fire and smoke damage. The cause is still under investigation.
