Graduation parade for new firefighters

SOUTH Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s newest recruits have graduated after 13 weeks’ intensive training.

SOUTH Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s newest recruits have graduated after 13 weeks’ intensive training.

A passing out parade was held at the training centre in Handsworth for the group of eight firefighters, including Rotherham’s Lee Sheen and Mathew Harvey.

They showcased their skills for family and friends by rescuing casualties from a mock road traffic collision before receiving their certificates.

Phil Shillito, head of emergency response, said: “The recruits have gone through rigorous training to incorporate the demands of the modern firefighter role as we continue to provide the best possible 999 service to the public. 

“The financial pressures the fire and rescue service faces are both well documented and unprecedented. 

“But by recruiting these individuals we have also shown that despite the challenges we face we remain committed to supporting our future.

“They have worked really hard and their achievements are well deserved. We wish them all the best for their future career.”

The group will join crews at Parkway and Rotherham stations.
