Four people rescued after car leaves M1 and crashes into canal

FOUR people were rescued after a car crashed off the M1 and ended up in the Sheffield Canal.

A black Audi A3 left the northbound motorway at J34 Meadowhall before hitting a road sign and ending up in the water.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Two of the occupants were pulled from the car by members of the public, and a further two people were rescued by officers.

“The driver, a 30-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains this morning,

“The front seat passenger, a 31-year-old woman, was also taken to hospital but was released a short time later.”

An investigation has been opened into the incident, which happened just before 8pm yesterday (Monday).

Police appealed for witnesses or anyone who saw the vehicle before the collision, and are particularly keen to hear from anyone with dash-cam footage.
