Firefighters warn Fifty Shades of Grey fans to avoid sticky situations

FIREFIGHTERS are warning randy filmgoers who watch the hotly anticipated release of the Fifty Shades of Grey film this weekend to avoid being left “redfaced”.

Removing handcuffs and a man being trapped in a penis ring are just some of the unusual scenarios firefighters in the UK have been called out to deal with this year.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has urged fans of the film to use “common sense” to avoid embarrassment.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it was “concerned” the release of the film would cause a “spike” in people being stuck or trapped in objects like handcuffs or rings.

Since April the LFB has attended 28 incidents involving people being trapped in handcuffs, and removed 293 rings including seven instances of men with rings stuck on their penises.

They have also been called to help a man whose penis was stuck in a toaster, and another with his manhood trapped in a vacuum cleaner.

Each incident costs taxpayers at least £295, meaning the incidents over the past three years have cost £388,810.

The LFB started a campaign called Fifty Shades of Red, asking people to think carefully before getting themselves into sticky situations.

Despite the campaign’s worldwide coverage, the brigade said it was still called to more than one embarrassing incident every day.

In November firefighters came to the rescue of a man forced to undergo surgery to remove two metal rings that had been stuck on his penis for three days.

The man attended A&E at a London hospital but when doctors could not remove the steel rings they called the fire brigade.

Two firefighters scrubbed up and removed the rings using pedal cutters – a hydraulic handheld piece of cutting equipment.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman urged film goers in the region to “use a bit of common sense”.

She said: “Our firefighters do respond to some unusual incidents from time to time.

“We aren’t expecting a big increase in these type of incidents following the release of Fifty Shades of Grey, but ask that film goers use a bit of common sense to avoid leaving themselves red faced.

“Remember that 999 is an emergency number and should be used as such.”
