Fire crews tackle barn blaze

THREE fire crews spent Thursday night battling 250 tonnes of hay on fire in West Melton.

One engine remained at the blaze at a barn off Melton High Street on Friday morning.

The fire was contained to the perimeter of the building and the incident has not affected any nearby properties.

A fire service spokesman said: “Up to 250 tonnes of hay plus two grain silos were reported to be on fire at around 6.25pm on Thursday.”

Meanwhile, a lorry caught fire between junctions 33 and 34 of the M1 shortly before 5am on Friday.

Crews from Aston, Mansfield Road and Darnall poured foam on the HGV, which was carrying furniture.

They left the scene at 7.15am and a spokesman said the cause had been accidental.

And on Thursday evening a wheat bag heat cushion caught fire in a microwave at Wickersley.

Crews from Maltby and Rotherham attended St Alban’s Court at 7.15pm.

A woman in her 80s was treated for smoke inhalation.
