78 drivers caught using phones at wheel

The motorists were either ordered to attend an education course or given a fine and points on their licence.
Sgt Ross Masters said: “Looking down at your phone, even to press next on your music playlist for example, can seriously impair your driving ability.

“By using your phone at the wheel you’re not only putting your own life at risk, but also the life of every other road user.”
Twenty-six drivers were stopped for other offences, including not wearing a seatbelt, during the operation last week.
Six people were arrested in relation to stolen vehicles and a fail to stop. Two stolen cars were recovered.

Sgt Masters said: “Ultimately, we want to ensure that South Yorkshire’s Roads are among the safest in the country.
“To do that we need to educate drivers on how to drive safely and why it isn’t safe to use their phones at the wheel.”
