Suspect drives into trouble at huge gathering of police

AN UNLUCKY crime suspect steered into trouble when he took an allegedly stolen vehicle within yards of a massive gathering of police.

The 22 year old also chose to break the speed limit in Wentworth - almost within sight of dozens of police, with a fleet of high performance vehicles.

They were at Wentworth Woodhouse to launch the South Yorkshire force’s new Rural Crime Initiative and one officer driving in Cortworth Lane noticed a Nissan Navara travelling 14 mph above the speed limit.

The driver was stopped for that, but it then became clear he was unable to provide details of the vehicle he was driving.

Checks showed it had been reported stolen a month earlier from the village of Auckley in Doncaster.

The passenger, a 31-year-old man was also found to have breached a court order in Leeds.

He was arrested and charged with taking a motor vehicle without consent, carried in/on a motor vehicle taken without the owner’s consent.

Following the breach of his court order, he was remanded in custody for an appearance at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court. He pleaded not guilty and will appear before the same court on 1 September.

The driver was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and take a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. He will appear at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court next month.

Roads Policing Sergeant Martyn Micklethwaite said: “Traffic stops often uncover greater criminality, and those involved in crime are more likely to show a disregard for the law, limits and people’s safety.

“I am pleased two men are now off the road and we have been able to recover a victim’s stolen car.”
