College in line for Heart Safe award

A ROTHERHAM college with a big heart will find out this week if it is an award winner.

Thomas Rotherham College (TRC) has been shortlisted for the Educational Establishment of the Year category for UK Heart Safe Awards 2015, a nationwide competition for organisations and employers who create a safe working environment in cardiac arrest emergencies.

The college has over 65 members of staff trained in Basic Life Support and offers a range of first aid courses to all staff and students.

Opportunities to learn on these courses have led to saving lives on three separate events, including one student administering CPR to a baby who had suffered an infant convulsion and stopped breathing.

Principal Dr Richard Williams said: “I’m thrilled that TRC has been nominated for the award and that the college continues to promote the importance of life-saving skills that have enriched the lives of hundreds of young people over the last ten years.”

The awards, run by charity Hand on Heart, will be presented at a gala dinner and awards ceremony on Friday at The Midland Hotel in Manchester.
