Co-op to close its doors in Maltby

A SUPERMARKET which upset shoppers by imposing a time limit in its car park will close next month.

Customers at the The Co-operative store on High Street in Maltby were upset a year ago after the chain brought in the one-hour limit at the car park, which previously allowed unlimited parking.

Now the chain has confirmed the store will close on May 14.

The 15-strong team working there face redundancy, although the company, which said the closure decision had been made “with the greatest reluctance”, stressed that it would attempt to redeploy staff in the area.

No reason has been given for the closure.

The Co-operative said last year that the car park time limit was for the benefit of its customers.

But Maltby resident David Brown, who highlighted the car park issue in the Advertiser last year, said the store had seemed quieter since.

He added that The Co-op had been in Maltby for “at least 30 years” though not always at the High Street site.

Mr Brown said: “The store does not seem busy at all.

“It’s the only supermarket at this end of Maltby.

“Apparently, it is now going to be a factory shop. Co-op told us that.”

Mr Brown said he believed that the changes to the car park had had an impact on the store.
