Capita workers evacuated after suspected Wath chemical incident

A BAD smell brought work to a standstill at a call centre on a Wath industrial park.

Ambulances and fire crews from five stations were called to the suspected chemical incident on Tuesday evening (June 16).

The incident at the Capita call centre on Meadows Road, Brookfields Park at Manvers, saw approximately 75 people checked at the scene after reports of cases of nausea and eye irritation.

Fire and rescue officers entered the premises with equipment to monitor air quality after it was evacuated but no hazardous materials were found.

Fire crews were called at 7.50pm and left at 10.30pm.

A spokespwerson for Capita said: “On Tuesday evening, there was an unpleasant odour in our Capita House building in Dearne Valley.

“As a precautionary measure, we contacted the emergency services and evacuated the building while this was investigated.

“Shortly after their investigations, the Fire Brigade found that the building was safe and it was then reopened.”

A spokesperson for Rotherham Borough Council said that no investigation into the incident is under way.
