Busy weekend for firefighters after string of nuisance fires

A CAR, a motorbike, railway sleepers and bales of hay were all set on fire during a busy weekend for firefighters.

Crews from across Rotherham were called out to deal with blazes in East Herringthorpe, Dinnington, Maltby and Flanderwell.

The targets of the string of incidents, most of which were thought to be arson attacks, included:

- A Mercedes car deliberately set ablaze early on Saturday morning.

The incident happened on Oldcotes Road in Dinnington and a fire crew from Maltby spent an hour tackling the fire after being called at 1.10am.

- A motorbike torched early on Sunday morning in East Herringthorpe.

Fire officers were called to the incident on Lady Oak Road at 12.10am and stayed for almost an hour.

- A large quantity of railway sleepers found on fire on Salisbury Road, Maltby early on Sunday morning.

No cause had yet been determined by firefighters yesterday.

A fire crew was called at 2.20am and spent 40 minutes tackling the blaze.

- A pile of rubbish that had been deliberately set alight on Stainton Lane, Maltby, on Sunday evening.

They were called at 9.15pm and took a quarter of an hour to put out the flames.

- Bales of hay deliberately set ablaze on Sunday evening.

A fire crew was called to Landseer Court in Flanderwell at 8.45pm and fought the fire for half an hour.

- Conifer trees  set on fire at a property on Hall Close Avenue in Whiston on Sunday night.

Fire officers were called at around midnight and spent an hour tackling the blaze.
