Business chief exec takes home Athena Award

A WOMAN who provides young people with opportunities in the world of work was crowned the winner of this year’s Athena Award.

Jackie Freeborn, chief executive of Business and Education South Yorkshire, was selected to win the title which recognises women in leadership roles in business, the community and public services.

Jackie was among 17 candidates nominated for the international award which  aims to secure a balance in leadership worldwide.

She was presented with the award at a ceremony at the Holiday Inn Rotherham last Friday.

Sue Barratt, managing director of GROW (Giving Real Opportunities to Women) and Janet Wheatley, chief executive of Voluntary Action Rotherham, both received highly commended certificates at the awards.

All nominees were presented with a certificate on the night which was sponsored by the Rotherham Partnership, Rotherham Borough Council, Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, NHS Rotherham, Morrison housing contractor, Morthyng Group training privider and Garnett Dickinson Publishing.

Entertainment was provided on the night by The Gillian Banks Theatre School.
