Bugs beware as flu-fighters swoop on Mexborough

FLU-FIGHTERS have been giving staff at Mexborough Montagu their jabs as the hospital bids to keep bugs at bay.

The 12-strong team has been out and about on wards at Montagu, as well as Doncaster and Bassetlaw hospitals, vaccinating staff including doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants.

The aim is to protect vulnerable patients by reducing the risk of staff passing on the virus.

Debbie O’Toole, head of occupational health and well-being, said: “Vaccinating frontline staff makes a massive difference to our patients..

“The list of roles is endless and includes our doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants, physiotherapists, and also staff in portering and cleaning roles, ward clerks and receptionists.

“Having the jab is voluntary and it’s fantastic that so many staff are willing to be involved.”

The trust has already vaccinated 48 per cent of its workforce who have direct patient contact — that’s 1,972 staff in just a couple of weeks.

Over the coming weeks, the trust is on a mission is to beat its 80.9 per cent vaccination target from last year’s flu campaign.

“We hope to do even better this year,” added Debbie. “Our staff are doing their part but we are also reminding patients and visitors to help us by keeping away from our hospitals if they have cold or flu symptoms.”
