Brecon Hotel ready to close for last time

A FAMILY-run hotel that has endured for almost five decades will close its doors for the last time next week.

Emotional Liz Womble revealed that the Brecon Hotel, on Moorgate, will call time on 48 years as a restaurant, events venue and bed and breakfast on Friday.

This week Liz revealed that the hotel had yet to be sold, but added: “The time has come for us to close. It’s terribly sad.”

Plans to transform the Brecon into a GP surgery are believed to have fallen flat earlier this year.

Now the premises, opened by Liz and Janet’s father, baker Athel Carr, face an uncertain future.

Speaking earlier this year, Janet said: “The hotel has been a huge part of our lives, almost like a home to us and our children, and many of the staff have been here so long they’re like family. This has been a terrible decision to have to take.”

Janet, who is among hundreds of couples who had wedding receptions at the Brecon, added: “It became clear to Lizzie and I that, if we continued, we’d get to a stage where we were struggling to keep our heads above water.”
