Bramall Construction takes on 10 new apprentices

A CONSTRUCTION company has given jobs to ten apprentices to work on a council housing scheme.

Bramall Construction has appointed the team to build two new bungalows, as part of a scheme of eight new homes on Newland Avenue, Maltby, for Rotherham Borough Council.

The eight bricklayers and two joiners will work independently on the project, with a site manager overseeing their progress.

Two of the apprentices would have been out of work after being made redundant from their previous roles and four have been given further placements with Bramall after doing so well on a site elsewhere,

The others have been recruited especially for the scheme or brought to site from other nearby Bramall schemes.

Apprentice Karl Turner (19), from Wickersley, is on day release from Rotherham College of Arts and Technology where he is studying an NVQ level 2 in bricklaying.

He said: “Being taken on by Bramall means that I can continue my studies at college and hopefully will complete my course at the end of the year, with skills that will last me a lifetime.”

Uzma Sattar, scheme programme co-ordinator from the borough council, added: “This is one of six sites in the borough where new council houses are being developed.

“We are supporting local labour and equipping people with skills by ensuring apprentices and student placements are working on the sites.

“I’m really thrilled that the apprentices on this development have been able to develop their skills and experience by independently building the bungalows.”

The scheme has been supported with funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The national regeneration agency has provided a £4.6 million grant for local authority new build projects in Rotherham.

The young people are working towards NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications with Bramall, which is committed to preserving trade skills for when the housing market takes an upturn.
